program overview

Researchers at UCSD Center for Healthy Eating and Activity Research (CHEAR) and the University of Minnesota are working together to conduct a no cost behavioral weight loss research program for adolescents and their parents.  The Family, Responsibility, Education and Support and Health Teen (FRESH-Teen) study is a 6-month treatment program for teens ages 13-16 with overweight and obesity and their parent.

Treatment will be held in groups in the evenings for 6 months and will focus on weight loss, strategies for healthy and sustainable lifestyle habits and skills for effective parenting.  No medications or medical procedures are involved in the study.

There is no cost to participants, and families are compensated for their time and effort.  The entire duration of the study is 18 months.

eligibility

you may eligible if:

  • Your teen is between 13 and 16 years old
  • Your teen has overweight and obesity
  • Live in Minneapolis or San Diego

you may not be eligible if:

  • Your teen has any medical conditions that impact weight or may affect participation in physical activity or treatment.
